St. Thomas' Episcopal School wishes its pipe band well as they travel to Argentina to take part in the iconic musical festival known as En Conierto. The youths left Houston last week and will be returning on Thursday, June 6.
"The St. Thomas Episcopal School Pipe Band, of Houston, is participating in Iguazu in concert, the great annual festival of orchestras and student choirs," states the school's Facebook page. "The band was presented (on May 28) for the second time. Watch the video of her first presentation at https://www.facebook.com/STESPB?directed_target_id=0&filter=2."
Gathering inspiration from the Scottish Pipe bands in U.K., Mr. Ingram, of St. Thomas Episcopal, wanted to create a unique pipe band with a bunch of young boys who were interested in learning the bagpipes and drums. As soon as the band was created, Ingram contacted Pipe Major Donald Shaw Ramsey to conduct a two-week workshop and church organist John Moseley to learn the pipes, and the school's Headmaster, Henry L. Walters, Jr., to teach the drums.
From these humble origins, the St. Thomas' Episcopal School Pipe Band has grown to become one of the world's most respected pipe bands, winning Juvenile Pipe Band World championships in 1985, 1995, 1998, 2004, and 2006. The Pipe also continues performing to some of the most prestigious events like the Colitis Foundation's Winter Ball, The Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Houston Blood Center and the Sugar Land Rotary. It has also performed for Queen Elizabeth II and former President George H.W. Bush.
